How Is Wegovy Taken?

Ozempic is a once weekly pre-filled injectable pen. The single use needles which comes in the box needs to be attached to the pen, then dial the dose to the required level and inject into the stomach or thigh. Each pen lasts 4 weeks.

Wegovy come in 5 different doses, the beginning dose is 0.25 mg once a week for the first 4 weeks. This will give your body a chance to get used to the medicine. At Week 5, you will increase the dose to 0.5 mg once a week, followed by 1.0mg. Then if needed, increase the dose to 1.7mg and then 2.4mg. Once you have reached 2.4mg you remain on that for the duration of your treatment.

Who Can Use Wegovy?

The weekly weight loss jab is suitable for those who are above the age of 18 and with a BMI above 30 (or 27 with a weight related co-morbidity). Why is Wegovy authorised in the EU?

Obesity can lead to severe health problems and many people with obesity experience difficulty trying to lose weight. Wegovy is effective at reducing weight in adults with obesity or who are overweight with a weight-related health problem. It is also effective in adolescents with obesity, but there were not enough data on overweight adolescents.
The medicine’s side effects are considered manageable. However, to prevent unnecessary long-term treatment, treatment should be stopped if adolescents do not achieve a weight loss of at least 5% within 12 weeks on the maximum dose or maximum tolerated dose.
The European Medicines Agency therefore decided that Wegovy’s benefits are greater than its risks and it can be authorised for use in the EU.

What are the risks associated with Wegovy?

The most common side effects with Wegovy (which may affect more than 1 in 10 people) are headache, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, diarrhoea, constipations and abdominal (belly) pain.
